This was an incredibly special show and it completely rocked. Technical difficulties had the show pushed back to almost 11:00, but they could have played all night.
There could have been an OZZY reunion at this show!
Everyone out front was talking about Ozzy being there at the show. Robert Trujillo was obviously there. Roy Mayorga was also there, and so was Joe Holmes, who has also Mass Mental’s monster drummer Ken Schalk and Robert featured on his new band Farmikos’ upcoming full release (coincidentally, Brooks Wackerman is also a Mass Mental member, former member of Infectious Grooves and contributor to the new Farmikos album as well, but he’s currently touring with Bad Religion – footage of Brooks, Robert and Armand from Guitar Center Drum Off 2011) .
“2 bass players and no guitarist?” That was overheard several times during the night.
Mass Mental delivered. It was intense and funky throughout. Little bits of songs thrown into other classics, some clever twists and some incredibly solid playing. The entire concept is rather unusual, yet works so well.
The dual bass playing of Armand Sabal-Lecco and Robert Trujillo was an incredible live experience. Ken Schalk took to the drum kit and delivered a fantastic, powerful performance on the drums. He deserves a lot more attention than he gets for his drumming abilities, along with the surprisingly killer vocals from Benji Webbe of Skindred and Whit(field) Crane of Ugly Kid Joe. The DJ/ turntablist (C-Minus) added a lot to the music. Doc Coyle also joined in and played guitar on some Black Sabbath tunes towards the end of the show. “Symptom of the Universe” and “Fairies Wear Boots” were great jams. The show itself was incredible and could easily be considered one of the best of the year.
